Science Syllabus

Welcome to 6th Grade Science

You will be learning: Science Safety, Science Processing Skills, Scientific Method, Measurement, Physical Science, Earth Science, and Life Science.

By June, you will be more than ready for the challenges of Learwood!

Most Important Class Rule:
You are here to: learn, be respectful, and do your personal best.

Class Curriculum:
Lab Safety/Scientific Method Review
Matter: Building Blocks
Life Science: Cells
Earth’s Changing Surface

Daily Class Materials:
1            binder (1 inch is recommended) shared with Social Studies
2            1 composition notebook
3            Science book
4            Pencil pouch: must include 4 #2 pencils, erasers, red pen, blue/black pen, pair of scissors, glue stick, a highlighter, and an ultra fine sharpie

Class Routines:
1. Be prepared with materials and a pencil (or borrow one from a friend).
2. Complete your warm-up activity as you enter.
3. Look at the board for homework and daily directions.
4. Write homework in Agenda and leave Agenda on the desk for teachers to check.
5.  If turning in homework, have it on your desk to be checked.
6. Work in small groups, work independently, and work as a whole group.

Tests (50%):
• For all test assessments, students will always be given study questions on the blog at least one week in advance. Students should answer the questions and see me with their answers to have a one on one study session to ensure they are prepared.
·   There will be no retake option available for an assessment of any kind.
• Please contact the teacher at any time to discuss extra help.

Lab Investigations/Projects (40%):
• Labs are a major part of our science class. They allow the student to apply what they
have learned to real-life situations.  We will have many hands-on activities in this class.
The students will be expected to follow all Class and Lab Safety Rules at all times.  I will reinforce lab safety and rules before each activity. I expect the students’ full attention when directions are given before labs because they are important for the safety of all students.
For any project given throughout the school year, rubrics are given in advance and reviewed in detail with your child before starting the project.  Pease use these rubrics to ensure that everything has been included within the expectations of the grade that is expected.

Homework /Class Work (10%):
Homework is an important part of science class.  It is used to reinforce concepts taught in class as well as to help teach responsibility.
• Homework turned in complete and on time will earn 100%.  (2pts)
• Incomplete homework (or homework lacking effort) will earn zero points.  Homework that is not done on time will not be allowed to be made up for points due to the fact that the materials will be reviewed the day the assignment is due. While the content is being reviewed in class the student will be able to fill in the correct information since they are already missing out on the points.  This will give the student an opportunity

PowerSchool:
Grades will be entered into PowerSchool in a timely manner.  Please review assignments/projects/assessments with your child after the grade have been entered.  If after going over the assignments/projects/assessments with your child, and they were unable to explain to you what was wrong please have your child come in and meet with me during lunch/recess for clarification.

Class Participation:
• I expect students to be involved in class at all times.  This includes independent work, partner work, group work, whole class discussion, or instruction time. Group work is a major part of this class and I expect students to work cooperatively within their group.

During class activities, students can ask themselves:
Are they involved in the discussion or activity?
•  Are they staying on task?
•  Are they making positive contributions to the class?

Absences:
• Whenever a student is absent, it is their responsibility to make up all work in a timely
fashion.  In the handbook, it states that every student gets two days for every one day that they are absent.  All homework can be checked daily on the team and individual teacher blog.  There is also a spot on the team blog labeled Daily Work where there are detailed descriptions about daily lessons.
• If a student is absent for a lab or group work assignment they will be given an alternative assignment to complete individually that will replace the grade.

I have read the participation policy and discussed it with my child:  (This can be referenced at any time on my blog)
